For a burst of delicious flavor in your drinks, look no further than honey simple syrup. Its natural sweetness provides a wonderful alternative to refined sugar, and it’s incredibly easy to prepare.

This Simple Syrup alternative is a key ingredient in my recipe for Virgin Mojito Mocktails, but is also perfect for adding to coffee, tea, lemonade or anything you normally add sugar to.

Is Honey Simple Syrup healthy?

Hmmm, “healthy” is such a strong word. While honey-based simple syrup offers some advantages over refined sugar simple syrup, it’s essential to understand its place in a balanced diet. Honey itself contains antioxidants and trace minerals, which can offer some potential benefits. However, it’s still primarily composed of sugars, meaning it contributes to your overall sugar intake. Therefore, while it might be a “less processed” or “more natural” sweetener, it should still be consumed in moderation. Overconsumption of any type of sugar, including honey, can contribute to various health issues. So, in essence, this can be a flavorful alternative, but it’s not a health food. It’s best used as a treat, rather than a dietary staple.

How long does this last?

Honey might last forever, but unfortunately turning it into Simple Syrup does reduce the shelf life. Store it in an air tight container in the fridge, and it will probably last you a few months. Having said that, I still use a jar I made over 6 months ago and it still seems perfectly fine, so take that with a grain of salt (or sugar!).

Choosing the right honey

You’ll find that different types of honey will bring different flavour profiles to the table. I recommend buying raw honey that has been sourced locally. Unprocessed honey will bring the most amount of health benefits to your syrup. If you are using raw honey, avoid heating it too much to keep the good bacteria intact! Can’t find local honey? That’s okay. Store bought will work too. Just be mindful of buying the cheap stuff! Studies have shown that around half of commercial honey could be adulterated!

  1. Combine warm water and honey in a jar. Shake vigorously until the honey is dissolved.

  1. Allow to cool and store in the fridge for up to 2 months.
